........................................................

Dado momento, a coisa realmente "engrenou".

Baden PowellThis classic 1966 Forma album, reissued on LP by Fontana in 1978 and on CD by PolyGram Brazil in 1990, brought Baden Powell's first recordings for his originals "Vou Por Aí" (with Aloysio de Oliveira), "Apelo," and "Deixa" (both with Vinícius de Moraes; other fruits of the fundamental partnership began in 1962). And there is more: the participation of underrated harmonica player Maurício Einhorn, who adds much to the program from the intro of the opening track, "Vou Por Aí," where unaccompanied guitar and harmonica perform with enchanting polyphony, building independent lines that allow room for the entrance of the rhythm section (no reference given in the album notes, but they are Chico Batera on drums and Edison Lobo on bass), following the exposition of the theme by the harmonica and solos by the two instrumentalists and the bassist. Next comes the classic "Apelo," with two choruses of guitar improv with very discreet references to the jazz idiom, focusing in a Brazilian language instead. The valse "A Chuva" brings with its melancholic overtones a very lyrical solo guitar rendition in the intro; soon it's joined by the harmonica solo and rhythm section. Samba bossa nova is the vehicle for swinging improvisation in "Deixa" and the long-winded "Consolação." Equally animated in the same style is "Sem Saber" (Otto Gonçalves Filho), while "Pro Forma" (Maurício Einhorn/Arnaldo Costa) brings for its 6/8 setting an Iberian atmosphere. The acalanto "Tempo Feliz" (Powell/Vinícius de Moraes), in its second recording by Powell (the first had been in the same year's live Baden Powell ao Vivo no Teatro Santa Rosa), closes the album with delicacy, with Powell alone at the guitar.

----------------------------------------

There is the anecdote that Baden Powell was very drunk during the Tempo feliz sessions. It seems believable, because the film shots of Round Midnight prove to which precise playing and musicality he was capable of in such condition. It is said that the rather shy Baden Powell could only be more extrovert by drinking alcohol. This is very regrettable and he payed a high price, recording such an expressive, relaxed album like Tempo Feliz.

This can be seen in his commands, his rhythmic finger clicking and humming along to his musical ideas, which reminds of Keith Jarrett and was rather rare for Baden Powell. It is impressive with which tone, coordination and endurance he played in this jam session.

It is the only recording he did with the Brazilian harmonica player Mauricio Einhorn. Even though they play completely different instruments there were no boundaries between Mauricio and Baden, they were listening and responding to each other. It may seem unfortunate that this was their only recording but nothing remained unsaid. The record's grooves preserve their musical ideas and contain material for the following generations of guitarists and harmonica players. Tempo Feliz is one of the best records, that Baden Powell did in the sixties.

Maurício EinhornMaurício Einhorn, creative improviser on the jazz harmonica and composer of several classics of bossa nova, had his songs recorded by Tom Jobim, Cannonball Adderley, Herbie Mann, Paquito d'Rivera, Leny Andrade, Lito Nebbia, and others. Some of his hits are "Different Beat" ("Batida Diferente," written with Durval Ferreira), "Cloud" ("Nuvem"), "There We Are" ("Estamos Aí," written with Durval Ferreira/Regina Werneck), "Tristeza de Nós Dois" (written with Durval Ferreira/Bebeto), "Alvorada," "Joyce's Samba," and "Sambop." Einhorn's debut was as early as 1947 on the Rádio Tupi in the show Programa das Gaitas Hering (named after a harmonica factory which sponsored the program). In 1949, he recorded for the first time, with the harmonica group Brazilian Rascals, the theme "Portate Bien." In the same year, he performed with Waldir Azevedo and his regional band at the Rádio Clube do Brasil.

Einhorn had an original song recorded for the first time in 1960: "Sambop" (written with Durval Ferreira) and "Tristeza de Nós Dois" (written with Durval Ferreira/Bebeto), by Claudette Soares on the LP Nova Geração em Ritmo de Samba, on which Einhorn also participated as a sideman. Having recorded with a who's who of Brazilian music since then, he only cut his own first LP in 1975, The Oscar Winners, reissued two years later as A Era de Ouro do Cinema. In 1979, Einhorn participated in the Montreux Festival (Switzerland) with David Sanborn, Monty Alexander, and Nina Simone. In 1984, he recorded in duo with Sebastião Tapajós on guitar (having as a special guest the bassist Arismar do Espírito Santo) the notable LP Maurício Einhorn & Sebastião Tapajós. Invited by Pete Pedersen, Einhorn participated in 1997 in a show realized by the SPAH (Association of Preservation of the Harmonica) in Troy, MI, in a duo with Joe Carter; with whom he also performed in the same year at the International Harmonica Hohner Festival, in Trossingen (Germany), invited by Arnold Kutzli.
