Grupo de rock vocal/instrumental criado em 1967 no Rio de Janeiro, após a saída do solista João Augusto César, o J. César, do conjunto The Pop's. Seus componentes eram J. César (guitarra solo), ex-The Pop's, Paulo Sérgio (guitarra de ritmo), ex-Os Aranhas, João Carlos (baixo elétrico), ex-Os Bárbaros, Pedrinho (bateria), ex-The Youngsters e Carlinhos (teclado). Os discos lançados através da RCA tinham solos de guitarra e órgão.

O grupo se apresentou em diversos programas de rádio e TV, divulgando as suas músicas, por exemplo: Jovem Guarda (TV Rio), Festa do Bolinha (TV Rio), TV Fone (TV Globo), Aerton Perlingueiro (TV Tupi) e Euclides Duarte (TV Continental). Os discos lançados tiveram boa vendagem e a qualidade técnica é apurada. No 1º Long Play destacam-se as músicas "Índia" e os medleys "Maravilhas da Itália" e "Maravilhas de Portugal". No 2º Long Play existem solos alternados de órgão e guitarra na música "Meu Limão, Meu Limoeiro" e "Lara's Theme" e as belas execuções de "Theme For Young Lovers" e "Sous Le Ciel de Paris". Os Populares gravaram em 1967 um compacto com músicas de Natal, hoje muito raro, com duas versões de "Ave Maria" (Gounod e Schubert).

J. César também executava músicas de sua própria autoria. Nos Long Plays lançados, tivemos as seguintes: "Ginga", "Escala", "Balanço de Vera", "Zero, Zero", "César", "Trovoada", "Mara", "Balançando" (um verdadeiro "banho" em solos de guitarra). No 4º Long Play destaque para "Here, There, And Everywhere" e os pout-porris, com primorosa execução.

Após estes álbuns, Os Populares continuaram gravando; porém, seus discos eram vocais. J. César e banda encerraram as atividades musicais em 1978.

The records launched through RCA had lots of guitar and organ solos.

The group had shown their music on many radio and TV programs, such as: Jovem Guarda (TV Rio), Festa do Bolinha (TV Rio), TV Fone (TV Globo), Aerton Perlingueiro (TV Tupi), and Euclides Duarte (TV Continental). The records had good sales and the technical quality was refined. On their 1st Long Play, the song "India" and the medleys "Maravilhas da Itália" and "Maravilhas de Portugal" stand out. On their 2nd Long Play there are alternating guitar and organ solos on "Meu Limão, Meu Limoeiro" and "Lara's Theme" and the beautiful execution of "Theme For Young Lovers" and "Sous Le Ciel de Paris". Os Populares had recorded in 1967 a single with Christmas songs (which is very rare nowadays), with two versions of "Ave Maria" (Gounod and Schubert).

After these albums, Os Populares had continued recording; however, their records had vocals. J. César and band quit in 1978.
